We have all been there, rushing out of the shower, realising you forgot to take off your necklace. But does it actually matter?
The answer depends entirely on what your jewellery is made of.
Not all jewellery is created equal
The term "waterproof jewellery" gets used loosely, but there's a meaningful difference between pieces that can genuinely handle daily water exposure and those that can't.
Here's a quick breakdown:
Stainless steel - Truly waterproof
316L stainless steel is the gold standard for water-resistant jewellery. It is the same material used in surgical instruments and dive watches. It will not rust, tarnish, or corrode when exposed to water, sweat, or even saltwater.
All the jewellery at The Gold Collective is built on a stainless steel base, making it genuinely safe to wear in the shower, pool, or ocean. Unless otherwise stated.
Gold-filled (Water-resistant with care)
Gold-filled pieces have a thick layer of real gold bonded to a base metal. They handle occasional water exposure well but should be dried thoroughly and kept away from chlorine and saltwater over time.
Gold-plated over brass or copper (Keep it dry)
Standard gold-plated jewellery over brass or copper is the most vulnerable. Water accelerates the breakdown of the plating, and the base metal can tarnish or leave green marks on your skin. These pieces should be removed before any water exposure.
What about the shower specifically?
Shower water itself is not the main concern, it is the products you use. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and soap can all leave residue that dulls jewellery over time, even on stainless steel. If you wear your jewellery in the shower, rinse it with clean water afterwards and pat dry.
Can I swim with my jewellery on?
With stainless steel jewellery, yes, with a few caveats:
- Pool water: Chlorine is harsh on most metals. Stainless steel handles it well, but rinse your pieces after every swim.
- Ocean water: Salt is corrosive over time. Again, stainless steel is your best bet, but a rinse afterwards is good practice.
- Jacuzzi`s: High heat combined with chlorine is the most aggressive combination. We would recommend removing jewellery for hot tub use regardless of the metal.
Signs your jewellery is not waterproof
Watch for these warning signs after water exposure:
- Dullness or discolouration on the surface
- Green or dark marks on your skin
- Flaking or peeling of the outer layer
- A rough or pitted texture where it was once smooth
If you notice any of these, your piece is not waterproof and needs to be kept dry going forward.
